Three rings arrive from three different relatives, each with sentimental weight and none of them wearable on their own. The instinct to make one piece out of several is common, and it is usually achievable — but "combined" can mean very different things depending on what you're starting with, and a few technical realities decide what actually works.

What combining really means

There are two separate things being combined when people talk about this: the stones, and the metal. They don't have to be combined the same way, and in most successful projects they aren't.

Stones can typically be removed from their original settings, cleaned, checked, and reset into a new piece almost regardless of where they came from — a diamond is a diamond whether it began life in a 1960s engagement ring or a 1930s brooch. Metal is more constrained. Melting down and recombining gold from different pieces is possible, but it comes with rules that surprise most people, covered below.

Because of that difference, the most common outcome isn't a single melted-together blend of everything. It's a new piece made in fresh metal, set with a selection of the original stones, with any leftover metal and stones either kept, incorporated into a second smaller piece, or offset against the commission cost as scrap value.

Combining the stones

Before anything is reset, a competent jeweller inspects each stone under magnification for fractures, chips, and inclusions that sit close to the surface — the kind of damage that heat or pressure during resetting can turn into a crack. Diamonds and sapphires generally tolerate this well. Emeralds, opals, pearls, and some other coloured stones are softer or more heavily included by nature, and a stone that has been fine in a ring for sixty years can still be at real risk during the reset itself. This isn't a reason to avoid using them, but it is a reason to ask for the inspection before you commit to a design, and to accept that the jeweller may recommend leaving a particularly fragile stone in its current setting rather than risk it.

Melee — the small diamonds used as accents or in clusters — reuses very well. This is one of the more satisfying parts of combining several pieces: three rings' worth of small stones from old clusters or worn-out settings can often supply most or all of the stones for a new eternity band or halo, at a fraction of what buying new melee would cost, because the stones themselves were never the expensive part — the labour of setting them is.

Mixing metals — what works and what doesn't

This is the part people are least prepared for. UK gold is only legally hallmarked at four standard fineness levels — 9ct, 14ct, 18ct, and 22ct. If you melt an 18ct piece and a 9ct piece together, the resulting alloy sits somewhere in between, and by law it can only be hallmarked at the lower of the two — 9ct, in that example — regardless of what went into it. Melting different carats together to preserve an 18ct result simply isn't possible; the metal has to be re-alloyed with additional fine gold to bring it back up, which is an extra step, not a given.

There are practical reasons to avoid mixing beyond the legal one. Different gold alloys have different melting points and different hardness, and combining them can introduce weaknesses or brittleness that doesn't show up until years later, when a ring cracks or a claw fails unexpectedly. White gold and yellow gold in particular don't melt together cleanly, because the alloying metals used to whiten gold behave differently under heat. Platinum and gold should never be melted together at all — they have very different melting points and properties, and jewellers keep them entirely separate in the workshop for this reason.

The practical upshot: most jewellers will use your old gold as a contribution towards fresh, single-carat metal rather than melting mismatched pieces directly into each other, or will simply use new metal for the mount and reserve your inherited gold for a separate item, like a wedding band remade from a single donor piece. If keeping "grandma's actual gold, physically" in the new piece matters to you, say so early — it changes which pieces can go into the melt together and which have to be kept apart.

Design approaches that make sense of multiple stones

A few design directions consistently work well when you're drawing stones from more than one piece:

A cluster or halo setting groups mismatched stones — different sizes, sometimes different cuts — around a central one, so variation reads as intentional rather than as a mismatch. A trilogy or three-stone ring is a natural fit when you have three main stones from three sources, each keeping its own identity side by side rather than being blended. An eternity or half-eternity band built from melee is the classic way to use up a quantity of small stones that would otherwise sit in a drawer, and it wears as a normal, everyday piece rather than announcing its origins. Pendant or earring pairs are useful for stones that don't suit a ring — an odd-shaped stone, or one too small to be a focal point on its own — and they're also a natural way to split material between two family members without touching the main design.

The weakest results tend to come from trying to force every stone from every piece into a single design regardless of size, cut, or colour match. It's usually better to build one strong piece from the best of what you have and set the rest aside for a second, smaller item, or keep it unaltered.

What happens to leftover material

Nothing has to be wasted, but nothing has to be used either. Options include keeping unused stones loose or in their original settings as they are; having a jeweller set aside small stones for a future piece, such as a child's ring years down the line; or offsetting the scrap value of unused gold against the cost of the new commission, since old gold has real value by weight regardless of its age or design. Ask what the jeweller's policy is on returning offcuts and unused stones before work begins — it should be a standard part of the quote, not something you have to chase afterwards.

Typical cost and timeline

Combining pieces sits in a wide range because so much depends on labour rather than materials. A relatively simple project — say, resetting stones from two rings into one new mount using mostly your own metal and stones — often starts around £800–£1,200. More involved commissions, particularly ones requiring new metal, several stones to be matched or recut, or bespoke design work from scratch, commonly run £1,500–£3,000 and upward. Timelines typically run 6–16 weeks from confirmed design to finished piece, with design and stone assessment at the front end and hallmarking and quality checks at the back.

It's worth being wary of any quote that doesn't separate out stone assessment, metal cost, and labour — those three elements move independently, and a jeweller who can't break them down for you probably hasn't priced the project properly.

When combining isn't the right answer

Sometimes the right outcome is not to combine. If one piece is genuinely fine as it is — structurally sound, still wearable, still meaningful in its current form — melting it down for the sake of "doing something" with it is a one-way decision. If several family members have a claim on the same piece, combining it into something only one person will wear can create more tension than it resolves, and it's worth having that conversation before any metal is touched. And if a stone's condition is marginal, it's reasonable to leave it in its existing setting rather than risk it in a reset it may not survive.

The bottom line

Combining several inherited pieces into one is realistic and common, but it works best when you separate the two questions inside it — what happens to the stones, and what happens to the metal — rather than assuming everything simply melts together. Get the stones checked, understand the hallmarking limits on mixed gold, and decide upfront what happens to anything you don't end up using. Done that way, a combined piece can genuinely carry the weight of everyone it came from.
