For most families, the diamond itself is the part that matters. The ring around it is just metal, and metal can be melted down, replaced or redesigned without touching what makes the stone meaningful. The practical question is less "can this be done" and more "what needs to happen first, and what will it cost."

What resetting actually involves

Resetting means removing a stone from its existing mount and placing it into a new one. For a diamond in a claw or rubover setting, a jeweller carefully opens or cuts back the claws (or cuts through the rubover collet), lifts the stone free, and checks it under magnification before doing anything else. The stone itself is not touched by cutting tools during this process — only the metal holding it is worked on.

Once removed, the diamond is cleaned, inspected, weighed and measured. If you want a valuation or grading report, this is the point at which the stone goes to a laboratory. Round, cushion, oval and pear-shaped diamonds set with simple claws are generally easy to remove and reset regardless of age.

It gets more complicated with:

  • Old mine cut and old European cut diamonds, which often have thinner girdles and larger culets (the flat facet, or point, at the base) than modern cuts, making them more prone to chipping during handling.
  • Stones with visible inclusions near the surface or existing fractures, which can propagate under the pressure of setting.
  • Illusion settings, pavé work, or mounts where the centre stone shares metal with many smaller stones, which take longer to dismantle safely.
  • Very old rubover or gypsy settings, where the collet metal has become brittle and can crack rather than bend when opened.

None of these rule out resetting. They just mean more care, sometimes more time, and occasionally a recommendation to strengthen the setting design around the stone's specific weaknesses rather than to force it into whatever style you originally had in mind.

Checking the stone's condition first

Before any design conversation, a competent jeweller examines the diamond under a loupe or microscope. They are looking for:

  • Chips or nicks, particularly around the girdle, which is the most vulnerable part of any cut stone.
  • Fractures or feathers that reach the surface, which could widen during the mechanical stress of setting.
  • Girdle thickness — extremely thin girdles ("knife-edge") are more fragile and may need a protective setting style.
  • Whether the stone is loose in its current mount, which can indicate prongs have already worn thin or the stone has been knocked previously.

This inspection matters because it determines both the level of care needed during resetting and which setting styles are viable. A stone with a delicate girdle, for instance, is generally better suited to a setting that fully encloses and protects the girdle edge, rather than one that leaves it exposed.

Bezel and half-bezel (rubover) settings protect the girdle edge almost completely and suit stones with any girdle chipping already present, though they change the look considerably, giving a more contained, vintage-adjacent appearance even in a contemporary design.

Pavé or halo settings that surround the centre stone with smaller diamonds can complement an old cut's warmer, softer sparkle, though they add complexity and cost.

There is no single "correct" setting for an inherited stone. The choice comes down to the stone's condition, how much of its girdle needs protecting, and the look you want.

Keeping the old mount versus starting fresh

Some people want to reuse metal from the original ring — melting down old gold or platinum into the new piece — as a way of carrying more of the original object forward. This is technically possible but has practical limits: melted-down precious metal usually needs to be refined and alloyed correctly to reach a workable purity, and a jeweller will weigh whether the quantity of metal recovered is enough to be useful, since a very old, thin band may not yield much.

More commonly, people keep the old mount as a separate keepsake and build the new ring in fresh metal. This also avoids any complication with hallmarking: in the UK, any piece over the statutory exemption weight for its metal (broadly 1g for gold, 7.78g for silver, 0.5g for platinum and 1g for palladium) must carry a valid hallmark from one of the four UK Assay Offices — London, Birmingham, Sheffield or Edinburgh — to be legally described and sold as that precious metal. A new ring made in new metal is simply hallmarked as normal; a reworked piece that has metal added or removed may need to go back to an Assay Office for reassessment.

Costs vary enormously depending on the design, but as a broad guide:

  • A simple resetting into an existing or lightly-adapted design typically runs from a few hundred pounds up to around £1,000–£1,500, covering the jeweller's labour and the new metal.
  • A bespoke, hand-made setting designed specifically around the stone usually starts higher, often £1,500–£4,000+, depending on complexity, metal choice and whether additional stones are involved.
  • Grading or valuation, if you want it, is typically £50–£150 depending on the laboratory and level of report.

Timescales are usually a few weeks for a straightforward resetting into a stock or lightly-modified design, and anywhere from six to twelve weeks for a fully bespoke, hand-made piece, since this involves design consultations, wax modelling or CAD work, casting, and finishing before the stone is set.

The emotional dimension

An inherited diamond usually carries more weight than its market value. It can feel strange to hand over something that belonged to someone you loved, and it is worth taking that seriously rather than rushing the decision. A good jeweller will talk you through what is happening to the stone at each stage, show you the diamond out of its original setting before work continues, and not pressure you toward a particular design. Some people want to preserve as much of the original character as possible — the exact cut, the warmth of an old mount's colour, even small imperfections that feel personal. Others want a completely new expression built around the one constant, the stone itself. Neither approach is more "correct." The stone can carry the family history either way; the setting is simply how you choose to carry it forward.
